Westleigh Recreation Club

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am only interested in the pool/only tennis. Can I join for a lesser fee for only that interest?

A: Membership to Westleigh Recreation Club (WRC) is “all-inclusive”, providing swim enthusiasts full access to tennis and tennis fans complete access to our pool facilities. Unfortunately, we are unable to separate the membership fee based on usage.

Q: Do I have to be a member of the Westleigh subdivision to join the club?

A: WRC welcomes all members of the entire community without regard to where you live. The Westleigh Homeowner’s community developed in the mid-1970s made up most of the original membership of WRC, but has since changed to welcome members from many communities in the surrounding area.

Q: I live in the Westleigh subdivision. Am I automatically a member of the club, or don’t have to pay the initiation fee?

A: WRC requires all new members to pay an initiation fee, even if you live in the Westleigh subdivision.

Q: I don’t want to join the club, but just want swim lessons for my child/want my child to join the swim team. Can I do this without becoming a member?

A: In order to join the swim team and/or take lessons, you must become a member of Westleigh Recreation Club and pay annual membership dues. It is not possible to just take swim lessons or join the swim team without current membership. By joining, you benefit from full access to everything WRC offers (Swim, Tennis, Picnics, Socials, Clubhouse Rentals, etc.)

Q: I’m going to be traveling a bit this summer (or my kids will be in camp), can I renew for only part of the season?

A: In order to be fair and consistent to the entire membership, renewals are not prorated or based on usage. Member evaluates whether the great benefits of membership are worth the annual renewal. We encourage Members to consider the expensive cost of area camps for children, and how that might make the membership cost a much more economical (and enjoyable) option for their families.

Q: I would like to renew my membership, but I haven’t been a member in a few years (one year, many years). Do I have to pay the initiation fee again?

A: No. Once you pay the initiation fee you are on our roles as a “member” and may renew your membership at any time, regardless of the gap in renewal years.

Q: Who can be on my membership?

A: A family membership includes any adult person and his/her spouse/partner occupying the same residence and their children or step-children, and his/her parents occupying the same residence. This definition includes minor children and stepchildren not living in the residence due to a divorce or similar circumstance.

Q: I purchased my home from a WRC member. Is the membership automatically transferable?

A: No. WRC membership is not by address, but by individual or family. In the same respect, if you are a member and you move from one home to another but maintain your membership, your family is not subject to another initiation fee simply because you changed addresses.

Q: Is my initiation fee refundable if I decide not to renew or if I move?

A: No. The initiation fee is nonrefundable. EXCEPTION: If the membership was obtained prior to 1991, the then $150 initiation fee is refundable by sending a letter to the Board of Directors, P.O. Box 3633, Gaithersburg, MD 20878

Q: I would like to join the club for the first time. Do I have to pay the initiation fee?

A: Yes. Westleigh Recreation Club is a small, community club. The membership fee income is used to operate the club from year to year, and the initiation fees are allocated by the board for improvements, upgrades, maintenance, repairs and emergency repairs.

EXCEPTION: THE INITIATION FEE IS WAIVED FOR ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY MEMBERS WHO WISH TO JOIN THE CLUB DURING A DUTY ROTATION.

Q: I would like to join the club for the first time, but it is the middle of the summer. Do you prorate the membership fee?

A: Yes. Westleigh does prorate the membership fee for NEW members only. New members will pay the initiation fee and a prorated membership fee based on date of joining.

Q: Do you accept credit cards?

A: Yes. You can pay using PayPal  on this web site. PayPal allows you to pay with a number of different credit cards.

Q: Can I pay my fees in installments?

A: Yes. Subject to advance notice and approval, both renewing and new members may pay their fees in 2 or 3 installments, provided the full annual membership fee is paid prior to the opening day for the pool. Your membership form should be turned in with your first check and schedule of payment.

Q: I have a nanny/babysitter for my children. Can I put them on my membership?

A: Yes. There is a space on the membership form to add a nanny/babysitter for an additional fee of $50. They will receive an ID card allowing them entry to the club.

Q: At what age may children be left unsupervised at the club?

A: Children must be 12 years of age or older to be left alone at WRC, and must be at least 15 years of age to be supervising underage children.

Q: Do I keep my ID card/cards from year to year?

A: Yes. The WRC ID cards are barcoded, and the account is activated from year to year. Keep your cards for any future renewal of membership.

Q: Can I bring guests to the pool?

A: Yes. Guest pass credits are available on your membership ID card in a group of 10 for $50. Guest pass credits do not expire. (NOTE: Guests that live in the general area are limited to 2 visits to the club per season, as guest passes are not to be used to replace membership in the club. Guests living beyond a 3-mile radius of the club have no restriction on visiting on a guest pass.)

Q: I have guests joining me from another country for the summer. Do I have to purchase guest passes for each visit?

A: Under special circumstances, you may add guests to your family membership for a summer as a courtesy. Please contact the Membership Manager to discuss your situation.

Q: Can children bring rafts and “noodles” to the pool?

A: No. For safety reasons, only small, soft toys are allowed in the pool. The lifeguards have discretion on what toys are allowed in the pool. (Exception: WRC periodically hosts “Noodle Night” parties for the children. On these special nights, kids can bring rafts, flotation toys and “noodles” to the pool, and the pool is kept open one hour later, until 10:00 p.m.)

Q: Can I bring food and drink to the pool?

A: While food and drink are not allowed on the concrete pool deck, members are welcome to bring food and drink to enjoy on all grassy areas of the club, as well as the patio area. The picnic tables and patio area are available on a first-come, first-served basis. While WRC does not have a formal snack bar, many area restaurants deliver to the club.
